How are scaffold towers inspected?
Scaffold towers are an ideal choice for access when a ladder may not be suitable, and you need to work at height for long periods. The type of tower required will depend on your tasks, and choosing a larger working platform will give you extra space to manoeuvre and room for tools, equipment, and materials. Access towers are the perfect temporary solution, just like ladders are for some tasks; however, they should only be used if they are in good working condition. Regularly inspecting your scaffold tower (before and after use) is extremely important, as it helps ensure it remains safe to use.
Below are tips on how best to inspect a scaffolding tower:
- Scaffold towers should comply with the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) standards for scaffolds.
- It is recommended that inspections take place before use, after use, and at other intervals if anything changes within your working environment that could affect the tower.
- When purchasing a scaffold tower, ensure all components are there and that the instruction manual is available. Never assemble the tower if anything is missing or if you do not have the instructions.
Scaffold tower inspection checklist
Here is a checklist for inspecting a scaffold tower; if any of your answers are no, it is advised not to use the scaffold tower until the points are rectified.
- Can you see the manufacturer’s assembly guidelines displayed on the tower?
- Are the guardrails 1m above the platforms, including the intermediate platforms?
- Are mid-rails on all working platforms?
- Toe boards have been installed on all platforms.
- Platforms have been assembled at the correct height for your work.
- Has the hinged cover been added to the walk-through platforms?
- As per the manufacturer’s guidelines, have the horizontal, diagonal and plan braces been added correctly?
- Do the castor wheel locks work?
- Do the adjustable legs work, and have they been placed at the correct height?
- Is the integral access rung ladder secured to the top of the tower?
- When the tower has a fall height of 4m or more, has it been assembled by a PASMA-trained installer?
When to inspect a scaffold tower?
Scaffold towers should be inspected regularly when assembled, before use, after any alterations, or when any situation could affect the tower’s structural integrity, which is what PASMA recommends.
When the scaffold tower has a fall height of 2m or more, it should be inspected at a minimum once a day. If it is possible to fall 2 metres or more from the scaffold tower, it should be inspected at least once every 7 days, with a new inspection report issued each time.
