21ft Used Scaffold Tubes Repurposed for a Chicken Run in Milton Keynes

But every so often, a customer sends in photos that remind us just how versatile scaffold tube really is. Our latest project comes from a customer in Milton Keynes, who used three of our used 21ft scaffold tubes to build a robust chicken run in their back garden.
The project brief
This customer got in touch after searching for a way to create an overhead frame for their chicken enclosure, one that would be strong enough to support wire netting and stand up to the weather, without the cost or hassle of a bought-in kit. Their garden already housed a handful of chicken coops along the fence line, and they wanted a permanent structure running the length of the run to keep the birds safe from foxes and birds of prey overhead.
Rather than using timber battens, which can warp, rot, or sag under netting over time, the customer chose steel scaffold tubes as the better option. To cover the long span, they chose three 21ft used scaffolding tubes as the main supports for the overhead frame and wire netting, and we arranged delivery straight to their home in Milton Keynes.
Why scaffold tube works so well for this kind of build
Scaffold tubes are built to do a demanding job. On a construction site, they form the structural backbone of a working platform, so they need to hold their shape under load, resist corrosion and stay rigid over long spans. Those same properties translate brilliantly into garden and agricultural projects.
For a chicken run, a 21ft length of galvanised tube gives you a single, continuous span with no joins in the middle, which matters when you’re trying to stretch netting tightly and evenly across a long run. Unlike wood, there’s no risk of the frame twisting, splitting or rotting where it meets the ground or the fence posts. And because the tubes are galvanised, they’re already protected against rust, so there’s no need for the customer to paint or treat them before use.
Buying used tubes also meant a lower price point for a garden project like this, without any compromise on strength. Our used stock is checked before it goes out, so customers get tubes that are structurally sound, just with the odd cosmetic mark from a previous life on site.
From order to delivery
The customer placed their order online, selecting three 21ft used scaffold tubes, and we delivered them directly to their property in Milton Keynes. As with all our tube orders, no special handling was needed on our end; the lengths were simply picked, checked and sent out ready to use.
Once on site, the customer ran the tubes along the top of the existing garden fencing to form the ridge and side rails of the run, then secured wire mesh netting across and around the frame. The result, shown in the photo they sent us, is a long, arched enclosure that spans the full width of the garden, keeping the coops below fully covered and predator-proof, while still allowing light and air through.
The finished result
The finished chicken run now stretches the length of the customer’s garden fence line, with the three 21ft tubes forming a strong overhead skeleton for the netting. It’s a simple build in principle, but an effective one: the tubes give the structure the rigidity it needs to stay taut and true, even over such a long span, and there’s no ongoing maintenance to worry about beyond keeping the netting secure.
It’s also a good reminder that scaffold tube doesn’t need to be part of a scaffold to earn its keep. Chicken runs, fruit cages, plant supports and garden frames all benefit from the same strength and weather resistance that makes tube so reliable on a building site.
Other outdoor uses for scaffold tubes
The strength and weather resistance of steel tubes also make them useful for other outdoor structures and garden projects. In another customer project, scaffold tubes were used to create tree supports, providing a sturdy framework to help the trees establish.
