Scaffold boards are a superb choice as they are sturdy and robust. Using various softwood lengths, either 8ft planks, 10ft or 13ft scaffolding boards, allows you to make a simple wooden flower bed or planter; you can also paint them with different colours to blend in with the natural surroundings.

How to create a raised garden bed

Here is our DIY guide to making a simple raised bed using 4 scaffolding boards. Raised beds are a real hit in urban allotments; you will see them popping up everywhere. They are perfect for ensuring there are fewer weeds and the soil warms up quickly in the raised beds, and finally, there is no digging involved as you fill the bed with the soil/compost you require depending on what you are planting.

So how do you make a scaffold board planter?

In this example, we will be using 4x new whitewood scaffold boards:

Use an edging tool to create the shape/area in the ground where the raised bed is going to be placed. Then it would be best if you dug approx. 100mm into the ground shovelling the excess dirt into the centre of the raised bed area. This is where your boards are going to be situated.
Now put the boards in the dugout sections so you can get an idea of how the raised bed will look and for you to see the size of the bed, then level out the boards either by digging out more soil or packing it into any gaps.
Once you are happy with how the boards are placed and they are level, you can then nail them together. The best way to do this is to use small wooden blocks that sit on the inside corners of the bed that are the same height as the boards. Screw these to the boards to create your raised bed framework.
You can make your boards more secure by placing trellis stakes into the ground around the external perimeter of the frame. The number of stakes will depend on the length of your planter.
Fill your scaffolding board raised beds with compost and manure, leave a few inches gap at the very top, and then you are ready to get planting your veggies or flowers.

This is just a straightforward design, and as mentioned before, you can create many different styles and shapes of scaffold board raised beds to suit you and your garden.
