The Project: Building a Sensory Garden with Scaffold Boards
To enhance their site and provide a calming outdoor area, the charity decided to create a sensory garden. This project would combine gardening, hands-on learning, and equine therapy to give young people a space to relax, explore, and connect with nature.
To construct the raised garden beds, they purchased 10x new 13ft (3.9m) European Whitewood Scaffold Boards (225mm x 38mm) from Scaffolding Supplies for Sale.
As the charity shared:
“We are building a sensory garden on our site for the young people to use as a relaxing area and also to help with maintenance. I will be cutting down the scaffold boards to create raised beds to grow herbs and vegetables for the horses to explore and enjoy with the young people in their session.”
These scaffold boards were ideal for outdoor use, offering strength, durability, and weather resistance, making them perfect for building long-lasting raised beds.
Transforming Outdoor Space into a Sensory Garden
The scaffold boards were cut and repurposed into raised beds, creating the foundation for a vibrant sensory garden. The beds now host a variety of herbs, vegetables, and flowers, including strawberries and marigolds, providing sight, scent, texture, and taste experiences for young people.
The garden encourages participants to:
- Engage in hands-on gardening activities
- Connect with horses in a therapeutic setting
- Learn responsibility, mindfulness, and practical life skills
By integrating raised beds into equine therapy sessions, the garden promotes well-being, focus, and emotional growth while using sustainable materials.
Why Scaffold Boards Were the Perfect Choice
The 13ft European whitewood scaffold boards were chosen because of their:
- Durability – strong enough to withstand outdoor conditions
- Versatility – easy to cut and repurpose for raised beds
- Long-lasting performance – ideal for a garden that will be used year-round
This project demonstrates how construction materials can be repurposed for creative, community-focused projects while supporting therapeutic and educational outcomes.
Results: A Thriving Sensory Garden
The sensory garden is now a peaceful, interactive space where young people can relax, garden, and join horse sessions. It provides:
- A calming environment for relaxation and reflection
- Practical learning opportunities through planting, harvesting, and garden maintenance
- Therapeutic benefits of combining hands-on activities with equine-assisted therapy
The project highlights the impact of simple, high-quality scaffold boards in creating long-term, meaningful spaces that support community wellbeing, mental health, and educational development.
